Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud was convicted by the ICC in 2022 for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Timbuktu, Mali, during the occupation by Ansar Dine and Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb between 2012 and 2013.
As a member of the Islamic police, Al Hassan was held responsible for enforcing an extreme interpretation of Sharia law that subjected residents to flogging, amputation, forced marriages, sexual slavery, and the deliberate destruction of historic religious sites โ including ancient mausoleums at a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The case has now entered its reparations phase. Trial Chamber X is due to issue a reparations order on 28 April 2026, determining the remedies owed to survivors. This marks a significant stage in international accountability for mass atrocities and the rights of victims in ICC proceedings.
